Patience and Tolerance-Ingredients of a Calm Mind

Once, there was a spiritual guru who used to travel from one place to another and give lectures to teach people the importance of being happy and cheerful for a joyous life. He was such an inspiring personality that people would feel PEACEFUL just after looking at him, and listening to his Valuable words was no less than attaining SALVATION.

Thus, many people became his disciples.
One day, the guru was travelling from one town to another with his followers and they decided to rest by a lake. When everyone settled down, one of his disciples asked him,
"How can we calm ourselves when we have disturbing thoughts?"
The guru did not reply to his question. Instead he asked that disciple to fetch some water to drink from the lake.
When the disciple went to the lake but found that some people were washing clothes there, so he went to some other part of the lake. As soon as he was going to collect water, a bullock cart passed by and the water became muddy. He waited but one or the other thing kept passing by and the water remained muddy. He decided to return as the water was unfit for the guru to drink.

The disciple returned empty handed to his guru. After an hour, the guru sent him back to the lake. This time the disciple was able to fetch CLEAN WATER. He filled his pot and brought it back to the guru.

He was puzzled so he asked his guru,"How did the water on surface of the lake get clean despite the fact that it was muddy last time?"

The guru replied,
"When you went last time, the mud had not settled down and remained on the surface of lake, making it unfit to drink. But after an hour, the mud settled down on its own and you were able to get clean water that was fit for drinking.
IN THE SAME MANNER, YOUR MIND IS LIKE THE MUDDY WATER, WHEN IT IS DISTURBED, GIVE IT SOME TIME AND IT WILL SETTLE DOWN ON ITS OWN.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT EFFORT TO CALM IT AND WITH TIME, YOUR MIND WILL BE CALM EFFORTLESSLY."

The disciple got a witful reply to his question by the guru.
Interestingly, this guru was none other than the Great MAHATMA GAUTAMA BUDDHA.
